Always ask for references of previous clients (at least 3) and even better, see if you can talk to those people.  That way you will be able to find out first hand what the supplier did well and also, not so well. 

You should be able to find out how the supplier reacted to problems and whether they quickly implemented solutions.

Financial Stability

See whether your chosen supplier is financially stable. 

You don't need to see their accounts as such, but you could do a credit check on them, the same thing they are likely to run on you! 

Using a recognised credit check agency such as Equifax you should be able to obtain a professional statement that judges the company's creditworthiness.

After all, you will be investing a considerable amount of money with the company and you want this to be safeguarded as much as possible.  There is no point in having free kitchen design ideas and advice from the company if they are likely to go out of business.

You certainly want these and any company that is truly professional will be able to provide you with an extensive free kitchen catalogue of ideas both through past installations and suggested designs by manufacturers. Money Up Front

Be wary of kitchen suppliers who want all the money for the installation before the job is completed.  This may be their usual business arrangement but could indicate that they are having cash flow difficulties.  In which case you should be very cautious.

Popularity and PR

Find out if the company is popular locally, for instance do they advertise in local papers or support local good causes?  Companies that do this will be more likely to want to protect and enhance their reputation and so will want to make sure they offer outstanding service.

Time to Start of Installation

Be wary of kitchen suppliers who can 'do the job tomorrow'.  Expect to have to wait to have your kitchen installed by better suppliers.  They have a customer reputation at stake and hence will not rush installations. 

In addition, you should be able to get some good quality free kitchen design ideas from these suppliers.  In fact you should expect to be able to view a graphical plan of your new kitchen on a PC.  These are really good for enabling you to visualize your new kitchen in detail.
